Lipstick and the Art of War. Mixing beauty and the philosophy of Sun Tzu is not an oxymoron. Honest. It represents something I firmly believe in. You can’t create dramatic change in a business (or in life for that matter), without shaking things up. The cliché about having to break eggs to make omelets….warfare and beauty don’t seem to go hand-in-hand…but by taking things out of traditional context and looking through a different prism, you can see possibilities that you never imagined. Things that can be truly industry-changing.
Over many years in business – as an international Marketing Director, CEO and Board Director, most of the businesses I‘ve worked in have had major challenges requiring some really creative thinking to produce the dramatic step-changes needed. In this new blog, I want to share some of the practical lessons that I’ve learnt both personally and from others over the years – not just through success but also through failure. (It’s often through things failing or going wrong, that you learn the most powerful lessons).
I would also love you to share any experiences you’ve had in a similar vein – so hopefully we can all continue to learn from each other.
The first and most important thing I would suggest, is to BE BOLD…! Go beyond the usual limits of conventional thought or action. Change doesn’t happen by being tentative or hanging around waiting for it to happen. The best way to predict the future is to create it, and you can’t create it without moving forward. We don’t grow if we don’t move forward….
When you get stuck or stagnant, then not only doesn’t change happen, but along with stagnation, so comes rot. Can’t be a good thing either in business or personally.
Sometimes it’s better to move, even if it ends up being in the wrong direction, than to stay put because at least you are gaining momentum even if you then change direction.
Sadly what I’ve found in almost 30 years (oh, God!!!) of business is when being presented with new ideas or new ways of doing things, it is SO much easier to say “no” than “yes”. It’s the “safe” option. It’s the CYA (Cover Your Ar*e) option. But the option that really changes and moves things forward is the “being BOLD” option. When you gain momentum, you can make step changes.
So go for it…. Take a chance, have the courage of your convictions…. but a final word…before taking that first step, planning is everything – but more of that next time.
This blog is about learning and sharing from each other. So go ahead – be bold and share….
Until next time….
